Mike Enoch: "While coming up with my game idea I thought of many cool things that you might want to build (spaceships, robots, monsters, etc) - but what I really wanted to do was make a game where building itself was fun. Then it hit me: Sandcastles! At the end of the day I didn't get everything in that I wanted to (and the UI is a bit ropey...), but hey, that can all be fixed in version 2.0"
